Apprenticeship Recruitment Announcement - (7/29/2009)

Long Island City, N.Y. - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee of Plumbers Local Union # 1 will conduct an apprentice recruitment starting on the morning of Monday, August 24, 2009 at 8:00 a.m.

TO OBTAIN AN APPLICATION:

Applications MUST BE OBTAINED IN PERSON by the applicant only at the Local # 1 Trade Education Training Center, 37-11 47th Avenue, Long Island City, N.Y.  (You cannot get an application for someone else.)

Only one application per person will be issued until the supply of 1,000 is exhausted.

All applicants are required to bring a form of positive proof of identification (such as a Driver's License).  This is all you need to obtain an application.

 

TO RETURN AND SUBMIT AN APPLICATION:

All applications must be returned IN PERSON from Tuesday, September 22, 2009 through Friday, October 2, 2009, (not including Saturday or Sunday) from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Applicants must submit a single $40 MONEY ORDER (which covers a $15 application fee and $25 testing fee for the NYS Department of Labor aptitude test) when they return the application. No cash or checks will be accepted.

 

Additionally:

  • Applicants must submit a fully completed application with a High School Diploma and a corresponding OFFICIAL SEALED TRANSCRIPT from a state approved public or private high school. The diploma and transcript must reflect a minimum of four calendar years of high school work and the scores in both Sequential Math I and Sequential Math II must be at least 70 or “C”. In lieu of the required math course grades, the Committee will accept a high school diploma and transcript accompanied by a TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) test (Level A) with a “Total Math” score of 10 or better. In lieu of a four year High School diploma, the Committee will accept a photocopy of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and the associated TRANSCRIPT OF SCORES which has been issued by the State Department of Education of the state in which the test was taken with a minimum math score of 55 or 550 (depending on year of issue). GED’s will be verified with the state of issuance.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by a letter from a physician at time of job offer, and must take a drug test at the time of job offer at no cost to the applicant.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or prove they are legally eligible to work in the U.S.A.
  • Must take New York State Department of Labor Aptitude test and appear for a personal interview.
  • Must supply DD214 Military transfer or discharge form, if applicable.

 

The committee requires that apprentices be at least 18 years old. Proof of age is required at the time of job offer (proof may consist of a birth certificate, passport or driver’s license).

An informational mailer has been sent to all members of Plumbers Local Union #1. Anyone wishing a copy of the mailer may request one from the Plumbers Local #1 Trade Education Training Center.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under New York State law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.
