2010 Construction Workers Memorial Mass
5/20/2010

On Wednesday, April 28th, 2010, officially known as Workers Memorial Day, members and Officers of Plumbers Local Union No. 1 joined the Building and Construction Trades Council, the Building Trades Employers’ Association, their brothers and sisters in the other building trades and family members at St. Patrick’s Cathedral for a Memorial Service honoring construction workers killed and injured on New York City worksites during 2009 and early 2010.

Archbishop Timothy Dolan was in attendance for the opening prayer and even donned his own hardhat.

There was a special ritual of remembrance in which the names of the twelve construction workers killed in the year since the last Memorial Service were read out loud.  Twelve chairs on the altar, empty but for a hardhat and a red rose, served as a reminder of just how dangerous the work in the building trades is.  Those that were killed left for work those fateful days expecting to return to their families.  Instead, God called them home.
