27th Annual UA National Tournament “C” Division at Riverstar

won by New York City Plumbers Local Union No. 1

Cincinnati, Oh. – NYC Local #1 was a perfect 5-0 as they claimed the championship in the 27th Annual UA National Tournament at Riverstar Park on June 18-20.

NYC Local #1 opened the tournament with a 22-4 four-inning pasting of Milwaukee #75. In the bottom of the 1st, seven runners came into score, three on a Paul Cotto triple. Seven more scored in the 2nd. Pete DeRosa drove in two in that at bat. The final eight NYC Local #1 runs came home in the 3rd and that was all it would take. Keith Lagatta was 4-4 with two triples. Cotto (5 rbi’s) and George Marino were 3-3.

Miami #725 put up a much better fight in game two. Bill Smith’s triple drove in three to cap off a six-run 4th inning that gave NYC Local #1 a 6-0 lead. Those were the only runs they would score in the game. The final score was 6-3. Bill Smith was 3-3 in the win.

Another big inning was the key to a 10-6 victory over Providence #51. Trailing 5-0, NYC Local #1 rallied for eight in the bottom of the 2nd. Two of those were the result of a home run off the bat of Paul Tanzosh. Tanzosh was 2-3 in the game while Tom Barbaro was also 2-3 with three RBI.

Game four versus Toledo #50 was another low-scoring affair. The score was tied 3-3 after five innings of play. Pete DeRosa broke the tie with a two-run double. George Marino followed with a base knock for two more RBI. They later added one more score for an 8-3 final. Paul Sadicario was a perfect for 3-3 in the win. Marino was 2-3 with three runs batted in.

Toledo #50 got a second chance at NYC Local #1 in the final game of the tournament. This one was a little higher scoring, but the result would be the same. Keith Legatta snapped an 8-8 tie in the bottom or the third when he singled in the go-ahead run. Ray Croke and Paul Cotto both drove in two later in the inning to make it 13-8. The final would be 18-10 in favor of NYC Local #1. Cotto tallied three RBI while going 3-4. Lagatta was also 3-4 in the championship. Ray Croke was tops at the plate at 4-4 including a grand slam in the bottom of the 2nd inning that erased a 5-4 deficit.

AH Paul Cotto (.786) was the leading hitter in the tournament for NYC Local #1.

Ray Croke batted .625.

According to NYC Local #1 team manager George Malandrakis, incredible defense and the battery of Paul Sadicario and Fred Delligatti were the keys to capturing the tournament title. Sadicario was the tournament MVP and Delligatti displayed outstanding leadership from behind the plate. “Paul gave us some great pitching. He kept us in the second game by holing Miami #725 to three runs,” noted Malandrakis.

“It was [shortstop Paul Tanzosh’s] first year with the team. He was incredible and had a huge home run against Providence #51 in our third game to put us up 6-5,” said Malandrakis. “The whole outfield (Ray Croke, left field; Keith Lagatta, left center; Tom Barbaro, right center; George Marino, right field) was excellent.”

Malandrakis summarized saying, “Defensively we were great. Offensively we were clutch when we had to be. There is a lot of veteran leadership on the team. It was our first championship in a UA National, so it was very special and a great Father’s Day to me since I couldn’t be with my children.”
