Q.        What academic courses should one take in high school to prepare for future entry into the plumbing trade?

A.        The following academic courses will help prepare high school students who want to enter the Trade:  Math, Science, Architectural Drawing, Welding and Machine Shop.

Q.        How does one get into the apprenticeship program for this skilled trade?

                        Q.         What are the academic requirements?

                        A.         A High School Diploma with a minimum grade of "C" in Math I and Math II or a G.E.D. certificate with a minimum Math Score of 55 or 550 (depending on date of issue) is required.

                        Q.         What previous experience is needed?

                        A.         None, but experience in the trade is helpful.

                        Q.         Is there an age limitation?

                        A.         No - however, you must be at least 18 years of age at the time you start training (proof required).

                        Q.         Does one have to pass an aptitude test?

                        A.         Yes, and attend a personal interview session.

                        Q.         Does one have to currently have a job to get into the apprenticeship program?

                        A.         No.

                        Q.         Do you need to have a sponsor to get into the apprenticeship program?

                        A.         No.

                        Q.         How often does the apprenticeship program accept new students?

                        A.        , depending upon employment conditions. Recruitment will result in a list, with new apprentices being drawn from that list about twice a year, depending upon employment conditions.

                        Q.        Does one have to go to an apprenticeship school to  stay in the apprenticeship program?

                        A.        Yes.

                        Q.         How many hours in a week, must one attend the apprenticeship school?

                        A.         At present, one must attend the apprenticeship school for 8 hours every two weeks, for 5 years.

Q.        Does one have to take and pass academic (theory) courses to graduate to journeyman through this apprenticeship program?

A.        Yes.

Q.        How long is the apprenticeship program?

A.        Five (5) years.

Q.        Is public transportation available to get to the apprentice school?

A.        Yes, the Number 7 subway line, or a mass transit bus can bring you to school.

Q.        Who manages the apprenticeship program?

A.        A Joint Labor-Management Committee, The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, composed of both union and contractor representatives, oversees the program. 

Q.        Is one paid for attending apprenticeship classes?  If so, who pays the student?

A.        New apprentices are paid a day's wage and fringe benefits by their employer for each class day attended. 

Q.        How long does it take to become a journeyman?

A.        Five (5) years.

Q.        What are an individual's chances of being hired after graduation from apprentice school?

A.        Depending upon employment conditions, an apprentice is usually hired once he or she becomes a journeyman.

Q.        Where do most apprenticeship school graduates work after they graduate?

A.        Most graduates work in one or more of the following areas:  commercial, residential, industrial construction. Service, and/or maintenance, is a separate division of the Union.

Q.        Does a journeyman working in this skilled trade travel from one geographic area of the city to the next when the job changes?

A.        Yes. Local 1 Journeymen work in all 5 boroughs of New York City.
