How does the Plan work?
The Additional Security Benefit Fund is intended to supplement those benefits provided by the other Plumbers Local Union No. 1 Funds. The Additional Security Benefit Fund provides supplemental unemployment benefits, supplemental workers’ compensation benefits, supplemental disability benefits, supplemental income maintenance, emergency benefits for disaster, fire or flood, severance benefits, funeral benefits, death benefits, supplemental death benefits (available under Account A only), supplemental vacation benefits, legal services benefits, and education/training benefits.
Please refer to the Summary Plan Description (SPD) as a tool to help you understand the complete plan of benefits, as well as the eligibility rules. This document can be viewed under Plan Features and Documents or by clicking on the link above. Is there a separate Summary Plan Description (SPD) for Civil Service Employees?
Yes - The Additional Security Benefit Fund has a separate SPD for Civil Service Employees. How do I become eligible for Benefits?
Eligibility for benefits from the Plumbers Local Union No. 1 Additional Security Benefit Fund is based upon hours worked under the Collective Bargaining Agreements which obligate employers to report and pay contributions to this Fund on your behalf, and for which contributions have been received. You may not make individual or self-contributions to gain or maintain eligibility. Your eligibility is based on payroll reports, with monthly cut-off dates determined by each employer. Contribution reports with hours-worked are not due and processed until later in the following month.
You should keep track of the hours you work each month. However, the final determination of your Account balance will be based upon contributions actually received by the Fund Office. Designating a Beneficiary
You should have a beneficiary designation form on file with the Fund. This form is available under the “Forms” tab
You may designate one or more beneficiaries on the “Beneficiary Form” provided by the Fund. You may change your beneficiary at any time by filing with the Fund a written change of beneficiary. A designation of beneficiary will become effective only upon its receipt by the Fund. The last effective designation received by the Fund prior to your death will supersede all prior designations. A designation of beneficiary will not be effective if the designated beneficiary dies before you.
You must complete the actual form provided by the Plumbers Local Union Trust Funds. No other form of designation may be used. Completion of forms for the 401(k) Savings Plan, Plumbers & Pipefitters National Pension Fund, or the United Association Burial Expense Benefit does not meet this requirement.
If you have not provided a designation of beneficiary form to the Plumbers Local Union No. 1 Trust Funds, you should do so without delay.
If There Is No Beneficiary - If you have not designated a beneficiary, or if your beneficiary is not living at the time of your death, your account will be paid as described on page 14 of the SPD. When can I receive my Benefit payment?
Claim forms for benefits are available from the Fund Office. This form is also available under the “Forms” tab
Read the claim form carefully, make sure you answer all questions and include any required information. Documents and proof required for the various benefits provided by this Plan are detailed in the description of each benefit.
The claim should be mailed, along with the required attachments to:

Special Rule on Supplemental Vacation Benefit depend on when benefits are paid. See chart and Special rules on page 19 of the SPD. Also check with your tax advisor to see how electing Supplemental Vacation Benefits (fixed payment) can affect you. Change of address
