_____________________________________________________ What is Apprenticeship? _____________________________________________________ Apprenticeship
is a structured system of training designed to prepare individuals for
occupation in the skilled trade of Plumbing. It combines on-the-job training,
under the supervision of experienced Journeymen Plumbers, with related classroom
instruction. Apprentices who successfully complete the prescribed number of
hours of training in our registered apprenticeship program are awarded
certificates of completion and graduate to Journeyman Plumber status. Apprenticeship
is one of the oldest forms of vocational training known to man. It is a mutual
investment in human capital by employers, employees, and public agencies.
Apprenticeship is a system of training that particularly meets the needs of the
Plumbing Industry. U.A.
Plumbers Local Union No. 1
and signatory employers provide the career training. The apprentice provides
potential for becoming a valued skilled member of the union, the employers' and
the nation's work force. The
planned training involves a progression of tasks on the job, under supervision,
combined with Related and Supplemental Instruction in a classroom setting which
integrates the why and how of the job. An
apprentice is a full-time employee of a Licensed Master Plumber, whose beginning
salary is a percentage of the skilled Journeyman Plumber's rate, and who is
assigned progressively
complex tasks with corresponding salary adjustments until occupational
proficiency is achieved. The length of the apprenticeship is five years with 10
advancement periods. If the apprentice meets the requirements of the program,
advancement is given every six months, with annual wage increases. What Does
Apprenticeship Offer?
Plumbers
who graduate from registered apprenticeship programs can expect to hold good
jobs at good pay. Their skills are a source of personal satisfaction as well as
employment security. Statistics show that apprenticeship graduates earn higher
wages, have more stable work records, and are promoted sooner and more often
than plumbers who have not been trained through apprenticeship programs. The Top
