Of Those Who Were Lost. 59 Union Tradesmen of the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York were listed among the Dead on September 11, 2001. ( The full list is at the bottom of this page.) _____________________________________________________________ As our
union brothers hauled away more than a million tons of collapsed
building from the World Trade Center site, and uncovered the sacred remains within,
we were reminded of this
1920's quote, which helps explain why New York's
union construction workers were already well suited for the terrible job at
hand: "Building skyscrapers is the nearest peace-time equivalent of war..."
World
Trade Center Towers 1 and 2 under construction, 1973 One of the most informative books ever written on the construction of tall buildings is Skyscrapers and the Men who Build Them (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1928). The author, Bill Starrett, ran the company Starrett Brothers and Eken, which in September 1929 won the contract to construct the Empire State Building. In the following eighteen months, a small army of union construction workers completed the 1250-foot tower, a record of construction never surpassed. Now we have sadly been forced to perform the process in reverse, but Bill Starrett's words are just as valid as they were when he made his original observations: "The obtaining of materials near
and far and the administration of all those thousands of operations that go to
make up the whole, are the major functions of the skyscraper builder. Knowledge
of transportation and traffic must be brought to bear that the building may be
built from trucks standing in the busy thoroughfares, for here is no ample
storage space, but only a meager handful of material needing constant
replenishment - hour to hour existence. Yet it all runs smoothly and on time in
accordance with a carefully prepared schedule; the service of supply in
peace-time warfare, the logistics of building, and these men are the soldiers of
a great creative effort." -- Col. William A. Starrett, Skyscrapers
and the Men who Build Them, 1928 ________________________________________________________________ United we stand. Union we build.
