Can I become an Apprentice?

Apprenticeship in Plumbers Local Union No. 1  is not just a "job". It is a structured learning system that leads to a career. The education and experience received by an Apprentice Plumber is lifelong training for a career in the Plumbing Industry. Plumbing is an ancient, yet modern craft. Time tested methods of plumbing are combined with the science and innovation of the modern technological world.

Work Description: Plumbing involves the installation and repair of a wide variety of piping systems and equipment. The majority of our plumbing work is in the commercial segment of building construction, but all aspects of the trade, from new construction to service and maintenance work, are performed by members of Plumbers Local Union No. 1.  A plumber practices daily all the mental and physical skills acquired through a structured learning process during the five-year apprenticeship period. Every aspect of the job, from layout (or design) preparation to the final installation of fixtures and maintenance of equipment, must be learned by the next generation in order for the craft of Plumbing to continue. The layout and installation of piping materials, plumbing fixtures and mechanical equipment are learned on the job. Blueprint reading, drawing, trade math, science, related systems, code, theory and selected manipulative skills are taught in the related school program. The apprentice works under the direct guidance and supervision of a journeyman plumber in the field, and an expert instructor when at the Training Center.

Working Conditions: Our apprentice workday is based on a 7 hour per day schedule. The Training Center runs on an 8 hour academic day. Plumbing is hard, physical work, and is performed throughout the year, in all kinds of weather, inside and out. Ditch work, elevated work, and jobs in uncomfortable conditions are common. Potential hazards on the job require constant "Good Safety" attitude and practice. On the days that an apprentice attends classes, attitude and attention are also important.
